Hey guys, we are back with our second blog post after we wrote the first blog about Kampar. This time, it is in ipoh! Are you wondering what to buy when you guys visit to ipoh? Don’t worry as we will introduce you the things that you should buy there.
Firstly, we will introduce you guys about the tremendously famous Pamelo. We bet that all of you know that Pamelo has been the trademark of Ipoh. We went to check out the Pamelo Street in front of Sam Poh Tong along the Gopeng Road.
Pamelo
There are many stalls there and we randomly choose one. The owner of the stall is a middle age woman. We interviewed her and she told us that she has been selling pamelo since 1989.
At first, all the sellers are selling the pamelos beside the street but sooner the government groups all the stalls together and prepare stalls for them to sell their product. That is why we have the pamelo street now. Due to the stiff competition, stall owners hired pretty girls to woo customers to their stalls.
The peak season for selling Pamelo is always around Chinese New Year or and other festival season. This fruit is suitable for everyone as it is halal and planted organic.
The owner told us that the pamelos are mostly reputed to be from Tambun as there is a big farm planting pamelos there. Do you people know how to choose a pamelo? Let us tell you the way. Firstly, we must choose a pamelo with a heavier weight because the more heavier the pamelo, the juicier it is. Secondly, avoid dropping it as it will become bitter. There are two types of pamelos: sour kind which has pinkish flesh and sweet kind which has white flesh. Pamelo with a shaper head is sour while it is sweet when its head is round.
We were amazed when the owner told us that pamelo has many other uses except for eating. Their skin can be used for cooking. Besides that, the rind can be used to disperse the mosquito after we burn it.
Note: This is the map of the pamelo street

Next, we move on to another famous product in Ipoh which is the fragrant biscuit, a.k.a “Hiong Piah”. The name of the shop is Chang Weng. When we entered the shop, we were attracted on the aroma of the traditional biscuit.
The owners of the shop told us that they start their business 10 years ago. At first they were working for other people but after they know the skill, they start their own business. The owner let us try some of the biscuit. The outer layer of the biscuit is thin and crispy and the sweet filling complements it very well. It is really tasty.

Salted Chicken
The last thing we recommend to you guys to buy is the salted chicken, which is also known as yim kok kai in Chinese. It is one of the specialty in Ipoh. That is why it is a must try when you are in Ipoh!
Aun Kheng Lim is the pioneer for the salted chicken. We interviewed the second boss of the shop. She was so courteous and answered every question we asked.
Aun Kheng Lim is the pioneer for the salted chicken. We interviewed the second boss of the shop. She was so courteous and answered every question we asked.
She said that they start their business since 1987 and the founder of the salted chicken is Mr Lim Ming Tek. The chicken is baked in salt in such a way that the skin and meat is so delicious that you will definitely finish it all! The second boss told us that they used the Kampung chicken which is smaller in size. It is because the chicken has less fat compared to other chickens.
The chicken is wrapped together with Chinese Herbs such as Dong guai and Gei Zhi in one piece of oil paper and baked in an oven covered and filled with flavourful salt crystals. The salt is absorbed by the meat to enhance the taste.
*Please don't doubt about the taste of this salted chicken by its look. You will find it very tasty once you try... Trust us!
One of the specialty of the shop is it doesn’t provide dine in service but only take away. Staff manning the phone to take orders while there are also people who walk in and buy the salted chicken. The boss told us that during the peak season, they sold out at least 28 boxes of salted chicken in just an hour! We can see how famous it is! So what are you guys waiting for?
Note a box of Salted Chicken is just RM17
The shop is located by the roadside, no problem finding it.

小凤: yea the Hiong Piah is handmade the differences of handmade and machine is handmade is more tasty
annoymous1: the usage of the chinese herb is to enhance the taste of the chicken, it also the way of making salted chicken.
annoymous2: It can be store 1 or 2 days, but if possible please consume it as soon as possible to ensure it still have a greater taste of it.
annoymous3: actually there is the typing error we have change it already. what we are trying to say is don't judge the taste of the chicken by it's look.
jesslyn: the location that selling Hiong Piah is at Gunung Rapat Ipoh Perak.
Hinz: there are 2 types of pamelo, it really depends on what taste that you prefer and like to eat, there are sour and sweet one.
V-tjen: the Chang Weng Hiong Piah is near Gunung Rapat Ipoh beside the Gunung Rapat primary school.

annoymous4: for the sour kind of pamelo which has pinkish flesh and sweet kind pamelo which has white flesh. You may ask the owner to choose which the pamelo is nice and have the greater taste but the price may be slightly high because he/she find you the better pamelo.

Yenlee: yea it is true that the pamelo rind can be the ingredient for cooking. The rind of pomelo contains a high amount of bioflavonoid. The bioflavonoid in pomelo was discovered to even stop cancer cells from spreading in breast cancer patients by ridding the body of excess estrogen. besides that, the smell that we burn the dried rind of the pamelo will disperse the mosquito too.
